Pediatric Family Advisory Council (PFAC) Running Team

Pediatric patients are unique in that they almost always have a parent caregiver with them at all times when they are in the hospital. Living with a chronic medical condition is difficult; having a child with a chronic medical condition is devastating, stressful and exhausting. Illness becomes a life-altering condition for the entire family, often disrupting social, family and work routines, in addition to the financial constraints long-term, chronic illness brings. It is imperative that we do not lose sight of the significant stressors facing these patients and families.

That’s why the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center formed the Pediatric Family Advisory Council (PFAC) more than 10 years ago. In conjunction with the Patient and Family Centered Care Team, PFAC's goal is to strengthen partnerships with parents in the care of their children and seeks to create a culture that not only invites but also encourages family participation.

In October 2018, we launched a program to provide self-care, resiliency based programming for parents with a child at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. This program includes a warm, free meal once a week for inpatient families in addition to weekly yoga, craft making and massage. The program has been immensely successful, and extraordinarily appreciated by the families we serve. By providing a meal close by, families are prompted to leave the bedside and actively engage with other families sharing a similar experience. This meal provides nourishment for the body and soul, with a dash of variety at no cost to the parents. This program is fueled by philanthropy and we need your help to keep it going. Here are some of examples of exactly how dollars raised help us strengthen this program:

$7 – Sponsor a day pass to the Cooley Recreational Center for a family member
$30 – Sponsor a book of parking tickets for a family who is here long term
$350 – Provide a free breakfast to seven inpatient units at the Children’s Center
$600 – Sponsor a hot meal to feed approx. 45 patient families at the Children’s Center
$1,000 – Sponsor a patient and family engagement event for the Children’s Center
$2,500 – Sponsor a month’s worth of family meals for the inpatient units

Please help us support our parent programming by signing up to join Team PFAC or by making a gift to the Patient and Family Centered Care Fund. By making a contribution to our team and sharing this page with your family and friends, you are helping give parents and families at Johns Hopkins Children's Center a family centered experience. Every dollar we raise will go directly to our Patient and Family Centered Care Fund.

Together, we can make a difference!
